My rational mom response when dropping him off:
"Okay. I'll see you when you get home. If you want a ride, just give us a call."
My overprotective mom response:
Omigosh. He didn't eat breakfast and he's gonna get hungry and he only has 10 minutes for snack and there may not be any food to buy. Can I talk him into bringing a banana or something to put in his backpack? It's going to be so hot today, is he sure he wants to walk home? It's no big deal for me to pick him up. I'll ask him again if he wants me to pick him up. Geesh! There are, like, a hundred kids there. They all look bigger than Colin. I hope he figures out where he needs to go and isn't late and doesn't get in trouble for being late on his first day! Oh, there he goes. Omigosh! Omigosh! Omigosh!
It's just high school, Mary. Breathe. . . breathe again.
What I actually said to Colin was somewhere in between the two mom responses. I tried to get him to eat but he wasn't hungry. I guess if he gets hungry enough during class today, he'll eat breakfast tomorrow. I did ask him a few times if he wanted a ride and did convince him to put a bottle of water in his backpack. I also gave him $5 in case he wants to get anything at school or after school. All this for summer school? I think I need a tranquilizer prescription!
Oh, and Paul's response to Colin's first day at high school? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ (School starts at 7:30 am, so he was sleeping!)
In other family news, Colin, Marley and I spent the evening here:

And Paul spent the evening eating this:

I think that I need to spend more time with Paul
J - I'm so glad that Colin is going to a school with an old campus. I went to one and was very sad when it was torn down.
To everyone else: It probably isn't a picture that screams "I'm a high school!" But, it is the tower of a lovely high school auditorium that is a kazillion years old in our town.
I totally understand your mommy fears, but he'll be fine. He's a great kid, and you know that he's very smart. He'll figure it out fast, you can bet on that.
Thanks Sheila... And regarding Stu's comment about spending more time with Paul... Are you a sushi lover? If not, we can send the men out while we stay home and eat something good!
