Marley wanted some monkey shoe laces at the store the other day. We bought them. Now, we just needed to get her shoes that used laces (and teach her to tie them.) Tonight, Paul, Marley and I went out after dinner and bought her some very cute sneakers--white with black/white checks and pink trim. Vans. Her very first Vans sneakers. (She has Fred Flinstone feet so we usually end up at Stride Rite with very cute but very wide shoes.)
As it came time to lace them, two things happened:
1) I had a post-traumatic mom flashback to the days when I had to lace Colin's shoes up in this very particular way. It had to look like the laces were just loops, no criss-crosses underneath. There also couldn't be any bow tied at the top. They had to be tight enough to stay on his feet yet loose enough to slip on and off without having to undo the laces. Grrrrrrrr! This lasted for several years. It was too hard for him to do on his own and I would always promise to do it and then get frustrated because it was a big pain in the tookas.
2) I had to lace Marley's new shoes with some laces that were meant to be used in larger shoes. I had figured I would cut the lace in the middle, trim a little off and then tie a knot in them. The knot would be unobtrusive and the laces not too long anymore. Then it happened. That infamous lightbulb over the head. I folded a lace in half, made a small bow in the middle and then centered it at the base of the shoe's tongue. I then laced up the shoe and Voila! cute double-bowed laces. Look. . .
I am Mom E. Coyote. . . Super Genious!

Julia,
Yes, the Stride Rite stores still exists but, if can imagine that Vans are not the least expensive shoes to buy, Stride Rites are worse. Much worse. Marley has had the best dressed feet ever since I figured out why her pinkie toe kept getting stuck every time I put shoes on her. She comes by them honestly. Paul's sister and brother have square feet (an exaggeration, but just.)
Re: my problem solving skills. I was so proud of myself, I felt like Sheila. I've always seen her as the ultimate problem solver.
Okay, that is totally brilliant - though a boy would never buy it.
I got sneakers with laces for my two-year old pumpkinpie before I realized what a pain they would be, so I got those springy no-tie laces meant for seniors and put them in. She loves it, calls them her "snappy" shoes because the laces snap back when stretched and released.
